The Grand Hotel in Mexico City
Today's catrina post from the children of Guadalajara's Dia de los Muertos wish for peace is of Gandhi. To quote him,: “If we are to teach real peace in this world, and if we are to carry on a real war against war, we shall have to begin with the children.”
El Dia de los Muertos is alive and well in Guadalajara. The Jaliscan celebrations are memorable to say the least. For the third year secondary schools all over Guadalajara have been invited to create catrinas and place them all over the Central Historic district.
There are close to 100 of them in the plazas and this year the theme is a plea for peace (which is unfortunately not alive and well in Mexico with the governments war on terror and drug trafficking that has resulted in over 50,000 deaths). The children have taken a grasp on the situations which they and their neighbors face in everyday life and used that hold to create these detailed pieces of art thus blending their cultures historic past with a with for the future.
So through these catrinas that hold the representation of the bond between life and death that stand most time 8+ feet tall there are sure to be a few that you can feel a relation too as well as have appreciation for the incredible message and work these children have put into the world.
Zocalo on a warm November night.
